China Just Solved the Biggest Problem With Car Tires:
DO NOT PLAY THE ABOVE VIDEO!!
I stumbled across a video on YouTube. The title leads you to believe there was a large problem with car tires that has been solved!
- By China? The country?
- Biggest problem? I would have thought that was getting flats. Not according to this video!
- Car tires? Not other kinds?
The video talks about Sailun tire developing a new processing technique they call “Liquid Gold” that addresses the rolling resistance problem with tires.
Some background:
There is a technological triangle involving rolling resistance, treadwear and traction, especially wet traction. In order to get an improvement in one property, you have to sacrifice one or both of the others. This relationship is sometimes called the “Magic Triangle”.
Ah …… Mmmmm ……… Well, that’s not quite true. It seems that you can modify that triangular relationship. In other words, rubber chemists have figured out how to get better rolling resistance (or treadwear or traction) with a smaller sacrifice. Please note, they have been at this for 50 years and have made enormous strides, but the triangular relationship still holds!
But this video implies “China” has fixed this so that the Magic Triangle no longer applies! Needless to say, this caught my attention.
Come to find out, this video is about new processing technique developed by Sailun tires. In other words: This is a commercial!!
Yes, it’s likely that the rolling resistance is better due to this processing technique.
And – Yes! – Sailun is a Chnese tire manufacturer- one of the more prominent ones!!. And the video says they are sharing the technology – but that is a far cry from “China”.
Worst? They imply that Sailun managed to find a way around this triangle. That is, it no longer applies. NOT TRUE!!
If you pay close attention to the rest of the video, they make this claim only once.
What makes this even worse is that California has issued a regulation that goes into effect January 1, 2029 that is based on the same notion – that there can be a disconnect between those three things! California didn’t do this based on this supposed breakthrough. The regulation is based on legislation passed in 2003. I don’t think the tire industry was aware that legislation like this was being proposed otherwise they would have spoken up and the legislation would not have been passed.
This video is from a YouTube channel that has a lot of similar themes – a company in China has some tecnological breakthrough. The president of Chania Xi Jinping is frequently featured in the thumbnail.
Conclusion:
This is a commercial for Sailun tires written by the Chinese government.
